January 16, 2009 - HIMH Status Update

BROADCAST #03
AIR DATE: 01-17-09

Fanatics. Hello and Salaam alykum. I walked into the office after 26 hours of travel getting back to USA from Bamako Mali only to find out that Indie 103 FM had signed off and was now going to be an internet only entity. I wrote a letter to Engineer X and asked him what the state of our show was. He called me last night when I was deep in the confused sleep of jet lag sleep to tell me what’s up. Basically, he and I will keep doing our show but it will be on the internets only. I have broken down what I think are the upsides and downsides of this turn of events:

The Downsides:
No more being on the radio
- Can’t tune in from your car, etc. It sure was fun.

The Upsides:
No FCC – we don’t have to censor the music anymore.
No commercial breaks - I would plan on about 80 minutes of music per hour. Now that we have no commercial breaks, we can get a lot more music in. That means that I have to work harder to bring in more stuff but I don’t see that as being a problem.

So, as unhappy as I am to see that Indie couldn’t last, I am glad we were able to still get some music out somehow. Now, I have no idea as to how long the Indie 103 online thing will last. No one told me that Indie was going off air until it was happening so it seems that things around Indie happen pretty quickly.
Tonight’s show is the last of the pre-tapes we did in the FCC abiding, model. Next week’s show will be the start of something new.
While I was away, we lost the great Ron Asheton, guitar player of The Stooges. A hard stone to swallow. He was only 60 and that’s too young to go. Thanks to Mr. Pop for getting The Stooges out on the road for the last few years so Ron and his talented brother Scott could take all that great music out for a walk and get a chance to rock out. As bad as it is that Ron is gone, it is great that he had such a great last several years playing all over the world. There’s no way we can allow the passing of Ron to go unrocked so next week, we will get some Ronage happening. I will work on that show over the weekend.
Also, we will have our first all Jazz show on the last Saturday night of the month. I have been working on that one as well. Now that I have some extra minutes, I will be allowed to add to what was an already formidable set list that I am really hoping you find interesting.
I must say, the Indie thing shook me quite a bit. The only thing to do in my opinion is to make the best of things and take advantage of what freedoms we have been allowed. In a way I am excited about it as it makes the whole thing more underground but I am bummed out that people won’t have the same easy access they once did with their radios.
So, with the extended range of our choice for tunes, we have some very interesting options and definitely some music I have really wanted to play on our show but have not been able to. So until next week, when I will probably be coming straight outta Compton, tune in if you can, play some Stooges and STAY FANATIC!!! --Henry
