OK, everybody, I have a confession to make. I saw the title of the Patti Smith track "Rock 'n' Roll Nigger" and I flinched. My gut reaction was "Aww, Sam! What are you trying to do to me?". So I listened to the song and came to the conclusion that it was not offensive. Maybe some of you will agree, maybe some of you won't. I try very hard not to edit anyone's content on this site, but I do have limits. In this case I don't believe those limits were crossed. As always, feel free to chime in with your thoughts. All I ask is that if you're going to post a comment on the song, please listen to it first. It may not be what you think.
If you aren't familiar wih Patti Smith and that song in particular then that's a normal reaction to have.
I wanted to comment on the inclusion of the Rufus Harley song. I'm saddedned to hear that he passed away over the summer.
I'd picked up a used copy of his CD Brotherly Love in a shop in Albuquerque 7 or 8 years ago and couldn't wait to play it on the radio and share it with one of the jazz guys at the station.
I'm glad someone's posting Patti Smith. Hank stated some time ago that she got her last name from Fred Sonic Smith, which of course isn't true. He should check her out. The "B/c The Night" b-side "Godspeed" would be perfect for the show. It's the blueprint for that Polly Harvey stuff he likes. "R'n'R N." is about aligning yourself with those who operate outside of a mainstream society that had produced institutions like slavery. Jesus, Jackson Pollock, & Jimi Hendrix are name checked and she uses that word to champion them. "Love spewed from the heart of me." Also interesting...the pronunciation of "baby baby baby" in the first verse sounds straight out of Suicide's "Ghost Rider," another HR favorite.

Adrian,
That's what I got out of the song, too. I didn't want anyone to be put off by the title and not listen to it.
